Now we’re ready…

13 Mar

Now we’re ready to look at something pretty special.
It’s a duck, riding in the ocean a hundred feet beyond the surf…
Some sort of duck, and he cuddles in the swells…
There is a big heaving in the Atlantic and he is part of it.
He looks a bit like a mandarin, or the Lord Buddha meditating under the Bo tree.
He can rest while the Atlantic heaves,
Because he rests in the Atlantic.
Probably he doesn’t know how large the ocean is.
And neither do you. But he realizes it.
And what does he do, I ask you?
He sits down in it!
He reposes in the immediate as if it were infinity –
Which it is.
He has made himself part of the boundless
By easing himself into just where it touches him…

I was given this poem at a course I am currently taking at the Zen Center in San Francisco on Neurology and the teachings of Buddhism. It’s a fascinating course and I highly recommend exploring classes and meditations at the Zen Center if you are interested in Buddhism.

This quote reminds me that although the unknown is scary, it is not to be feared. Change is constant. And through change comes the greatest growth and development. Anticipate and encourage the possibility that anything can happen and welcome change into your life!
